THE KHOMBISINDLELA PROJECT
REACHING A YOUNGER GENERATION
“Show us the way”

When the Matriculation Results 2006 were published, our Board was concerned at the poor results scored in most of the rural schools and those in the Kwa Sani area were typical of rural schools in the Province. We looked at the results of two of our more successful schools and analysed the results:
Batlokoa High:
64% pass rate • 3 Exemption passes • 1 Subject Distinction

Enhlanhleni Combined
86% pass rate • 3 Exemption passes • 3 Subject Distinctions

We debated where Vukuzake could be involved in effectively improving this situation with the resources available to us and concluded that we could offer:
  • Subject Guidance at Grade 9/10 level
  • Career Guidance and EQ Assessment at Grade 11/12 level
  • A Winter School covering Maths, English, Geography, Science and input into Study Methods

In order to assess these needs we ran a survey in February (with the permission of the KZN Head of Education for the Sisonke District and the Principals) of 67 Grade 12 Learners and 9 Educators at the two schools and 12 parents/guardians of their Grade 12 Learners. The Learner results showed that only 5 learners had received Subject Guidance at some stage and none had received Career Guidance.
We established KHOMBISINDLELA PROJECT as a Pilot Project to introduce Aptitude and EQ Assessments, Subject Guidance and Career Guidance into Batlokoa and Enhlanhleni Schools. It will also run a Winter School for Grade 12’s from five schools and for this we have the cooperation of a group of final year students at Edgewood Training College. Study Methods will also be addressed at Workshops on site. The Principals of both schools are well known to us and can be relied upon to cooperate with Khombisindlela Projects.
The career opportunities offered by Sappi, Mondi, Telkom, Eskom, S.A.Transport Services, Tourism and other private industries and businesses have not been explored and the KHOMBISINDLELA PROJECT will include these in its portfolio. Also to be included are talks by representatives of such organisations, visits to Career Exhibitions and “Open Days” at Tertiary Education institutions.
For those qualifying to attend Tertiary Education facilities, Khombisindlela will guide learners in seeking financial assistance

“… that is why I said I don’t know, because our children learn nothing. They mix their subjects. They don’t even know how to follow their career subjects.” Batlokoa High parent.

Does the school have a library?
Answer: yes
Do you have access to it?
Answer: no
(responses to our Survey.)

“Few learners seemed to know where to find further career information. Some of those who did, have a brother or sister at University and obtained information from that source. However, one learner, who aspired to be a policeman, gave a simple and effective answer: ‘Lotheni Police Station.’ “

FUNDING FOR KHOMBISINDLELA

The Survey was funded by Vukuzakhe Projects but the Pilot Project will be partly funded by the Solon Foundation, Switzerland. The Winter School needs funding for a projected R31000 and to extend the Project to a further 3 schools would require an amount of R120 000 for 2007.
A copy of our SUBJECT AND CAREER GUIDANCE SURVEY, FEBRUARY 2007 is available to potential funders.
