Our Farm Family Health Project gives us a unique opportunity for intervention in the spread of HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis in the rural community. We can play an important role breaking the stigma of AIDS among farm workers and motivating them to view AIDS as something that directly affects them, rather than an external problem. We are currently conducting an assessment of the number of orphans and vulnerable children on farms in the area of the pilot project (Bushmans Nek). FFHP will assist parents/care givers in accessing child care and foster grants, disability and old age pensions and with the registration of births and immunisation. Farm Workers need to be motivated to undergo voluntary HIV and TB testing, to know their status. Patients who test positive must be referred to the local Clinic for ARV assessment and monitoring. They will be assisted to establish gardens to provide nutrition and food security. Patients need to understand the Importance of clean water and nutrition as integral. parts of the management of HIV/AIDS to prevent opportunistic infections. Once ARV therapy is prescribed the DOTS - Directly Observed Therapy System—will be put in place by people being trained to give and monitor the medication received through the Clinic. The Project will also assist patients who have difficulty getting to the Clinics. The pilot project will be monitored and evaluated with the assistance of Dr L. Pitt of Valley Trust early in 2008. |
