VUKUZAKHE PROJECTS is dedicated to improving the lives of less privileged and disadvantaged South Africans through education and skills development. It constantly endeavours to find ways of achieving these aims through innovative and effective programmes.
We are based in the rural Southern Drakensberg region of KwaZulu-Natal, an area of mountains and rivers with the villages of Underberg and Himeville as the hub. From here Vukuzakhe’s projects reach out in a radius of some 200km to rural settlements within the Kwa Sani Municipality and beyond: Stepmore, Lotheni, Centacow, Ncwadi, Umqatsheni, Ndindini.
The area is one of high unemployment with few industries. Apart from the Dairy Industry, the agricultural industries mostly offer seasonal employment. In the African settlements, most agriculture is of a subsistence nature as a result of overcrowding and poor farming practices of the past which have depleted the soil or resulted in uneconomic land distribution.
Education has been neglected over a long period of time as the following table (Dept of Education, KZN Statistics) indicates:

The low level of schooling works right through rural life — in the nature and level of the jobs people fill; in the high levels of poverty where the State Pension of an ageing family member or the Child Care Grant of a mother are in too many cases the only income a family has; in the quality of work performed for minimum wages.
VUKUZAKHE PROJECTS offer effective programmes to address this situation through education and skills development.
Some of our Projects also offer children and youth RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES which aim at developing social skills and a sense of community, an antidote to the boredom that is bred of poverty and the breakdown of family values in a society where there are many absent parents seeking a living in distant towns and cities.
